One Beautiful October Night

For something different, the Club decided to organize a dinner event in October, which is generally considered the most beautiful and pleasant time of the year.  We hosted a dinner reception followed by a special concert.  The dinner reception was held at Duson Gallery, housed at the historic former headquarters of the Salvation Army, built in 1928 in the historic Jung-dong area.  The attendees were treated with the display of numerous top-class art pieces, including those of masters Lee Ufan and Nam June Paik, while enjoying the mutual company.  We were happily joined by 3 visitors from Canada, led by Dr. Hanif Gilani (MPH ’19), a newly appointed Yale Alumni Assembly Delegate representing the Yale Club of Ontario, who was joined by his 2 sisters.  They happened to be in Seoul for the week and, as Dr. Gilani reached out to the Club, were able to join the special dinner/concert.

After the reception on the 1st floor of the gallery, the attendees moved to the 2nd floor, which is a beautiful performance space with the stage backdrop of a massive multiple-TV installation work by Nam June Paik, accentuated by a Steinway & Sons grand piano.

The concert was unofficially dubbed “A Special South-North Peace Concert” as the artists were Hyung Joon Won, a leading South Korean, Juilliard-trained violinist pursuing the ideal of “peace through music”, and Hwang Sang-Hyeok, a leading North Korean-trained pianist and conductor, former professor of music at Pyongyang College of Performing Arts, who fled the North and came to the South a number of years ago, with both yearning for a unified Korea and peace on the peninsula.  They jointly performed Ponce-Heifetz Estrellita’s My Little Star and H. Wieniawski’s Polonaise Brilliante Op. 4.  Then, Mr. Hwang played a few more solo pieces, including Amazing Grace by J. Newton (arr. by Hwang Sang-Hyeok), Ode to Joy composed by Shostakovich-trained North Korean composer Jo Gilseok, and Unification Arirang by Hwang Sang-Hyeok.

It was a truly beautiful and moving performance, and the Yale Club of Korea was truly privileged to witness these two special artists performing together for the first time ever!
